What a driveway that lasts is made of
The asphalt you drive on is the top two to three inches of a sandwich. Under it belongs a compacted dense-graded aggregate base, typically four to six inches for a passenger-car driveway, thicker where trucks park, over subsoil that has been graded to drain. Skip the base work and the prettiest paving job in the county cracks into alligator patterns within three winters, because New Jersey freeze-thaw finds every soft spot underneath. Pave-over or full rebuild, decided honestly
If your existing driveway is structurally sound with surface wear, a milled edge and a properly bonded overlay is real value for money. If it shows alligator cracking, sunken wheel paths, or heaving at the garage, an overlay just gift-wraps the problem: the failure telegraphs through the new surface in a season or two. We probe the base, tell you which situation you have, and price both paths when both are defensible. What we will not do is sell an overlay onto a failed base just because the number closes deals faster.
The Edison-area specifics
