What makes a driveway a good overlay candidate
The existing surface needs to be structurally healthy: isolated cracks rather than alligator patterns, stable grades without sunken paths, and edges that still hold together. Age and gray, faded, rough surface texture are fine, that is exactly what an overlay fixes. We assess by probing and by reading the crack patterns, which tell the truth about what is underneath. Roughly half the driveways we are asked to overlay qualify; the other half get an honest conversation about replacement instead.
Done right, an overlay is not just a top-up
Proper prep decides whether an overlay lasts fifteen years or five. Edges get milled so the new surface ties in flush at the garage, the apron, and the walkways instead of creating a trip lip. Cracks get cleaned and filled so they do not reflect straight through. The old surface gets a tack coat so the new course bonds instead of floating. Then hot asphalt, machine laid and rolled. The result drives, drains, and looks like a new driveway, because functionally it is one.
The economics, plainly
An overlay buys most of the life of a new surface for a fraction of the price, if the foundation deserves it. That conditional is the entire game. A contractor who quotes you an overlay without probing the base is quoting blind, and the failure will arrive conveniently after his warranty.
