What sealer actually protects against
Asphalt ages by oxidation, sun and air stiffening the binder until the surface turns gray and starts unraveling, and by water finding its way through cracks into the base. Quality sealer slows the first and, applied over properly filled cracks, blocks the second. What it cannot do is glue together a failing driveway: sealer over alligator cracking is a black driveway with alligator cracking. The honest sequence is repair first, seal second, and skip sealing entirely on a surface past the point of benefit.

The difference is entirely in the prep and the material. We blow and scrape the surface clean, treat oil spots with primer so sealer bonds there, hot-fill the cracks that matter, cut clean lines at edges and garage, and apply commercial refined sealer with additives at the coverage rate the product actually specifies, two coats where wear demands it. The driveway-to-driveway guys watering down bulk sealer give the whole trade its reputation; the finish looks identical for exactly one season.
The right schedule, not the aggressive one
New asphalt should cure at least a full season before its first sealcoat, sealing too early traps oils and softens the surface. After that, every three to four years is plenty for most driveways; annual sealing just builds a brittle film that eventually peels. If a company knocks yearly, they are selling appointments, not asphalt care. We put customers on the interval their driveway actually needs and send a reminder when it is due, which is how sealing stays the cheap insurance it is supposed to be.
